Classification

The classification of Faeries has been debated by many philosophers, and most agree that Faeries are simply individuals, and trying to classify them is almost ridiculous. However, for people to better understand the world of Fairy, it helps to organize them in some way. Many classification systems have been developed for Faeries, the most popular way is by the 4 elements of the Pagan beliefs: Earth, Water, Fire, and Air.

Earth

The Faeries that are classified to the element of Earth help with all things that grow in nature. They live deep in the roots of the Earth. Some examples of Earth Faeries are Dwarfs or Goblins.

Water

The Element of Water is representative of intuition, transformation, and the depths of the unconscious mind. Water Faeries especially like running water, such as waterfalls or rivers. Some of the saltwater Faeries are called Mermaids or Mermen, Sirens, and Selches, all of whom often desire to have a relationship with a human.

Fire

All of the Faeries that have the ability to change their outward appearance are classified into the Fire element. They travel through the air as burning sparks, or fiery streaks of bright light. When a fire Fairy is present, they often leave the smell of sulfur behind.

Air

All Faeries that have wings and are subtle, quick and have fluid energies are Air Faeries. The Air Faeries are considered messengers of the soul, because they fly between Heaven and Earth, and Body and Soul. Many of the Air Faeries have evolved, and represent all 4 elements. Their wings represent Air, their legs represent Earth, their shimmering or luminous appearance represents Fire, and their shape shifting ability represents Water.
